Courses for career exploration and finding a job? Yes, we’ve got those!

The UMass Lowell Career & Co-op Center is committed to helping students find rewarding careers. To that end, we developed and were approved to offer a sequence of career development courses for undergraduate students. These courses provide students with a way to receive structured support and guidance about important career development topics while receiving academic credit. After a soft launch of the courses in summer and fall 2023, we will have a full rollout of courses for spring 2024.

UMLO.1500 Career Exploration & Planning

Designed for undergraduate students who want to take a deep dive into the career exploration and decision-making process, this course has students examine their interests, skills, and values, as well as potential career paths. As a part of the course, students will complete CliftonStrengths for Students, an assessment that helps individuals identify their top talent themes. This is a one-credit course, offered on a pass-no credit basis and is capped at 20 students per section. We’re offering two sections — one on North Campus, one on South Campus.

UMLO.2000 Job & Internship Search

This course is designed to guide undergraduate students in developing a sound search strategy, developing tailored application and self-marketing materials, and practicing interview skills. The course will incorporate the Career Launch Method, a proactive approach to building social capital and tapping into the hidden job market. This is a one-credit course, offered on a pass-no credit basis and is capped at 20 students per section. We’re offering three sections — one on North Campus, one on South Campus, and one for RHSA participants (sec 203, also on North Campus).

Pre-requisites for UMLO.2000 are: ENGL.1010 College Writing I, and ENGL.1020 College Writing II, or HONR.1100 First Year Seminar in Honors: Text in the City.

There are no required textbooks for either course and we are providing CliftonStrengths (UMLO 1500) and the Career Launch Method (UMLO 2000) at no cost to students.

We look forward to filling all the seats in these classes for spring as we support UML students wherever they are in their career development journey.
