The end of the semester will be here faster than you know it and for some of our River Hawks, this may be their last semester with us. Wherever you are in your journey as a student at UML, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on all you have done so far and feel proud of all that you have accomplished. While you take some time to rest and recharge for the final stretch, remember that this is also an opportunity to take important steps toward a successful career.
Our office is dedicated to helping you feel confident and ready for whatever lies ahead, so let’s take a moment to review three key actions you can take during this break to set yourself up for success.
1. Update Your Resume
Almost every role will require you to submit a resume for the position. That’s why it is important to update your information and highlight all of the skills, experiences, clubs, roles, and more you may have gained during your time at UML.
If you need help with wording materials or formatting your resume, check out our Effective Resume Guide! It has tips, examples, and an action verb chart!
2. Research Industries & Opportunities
If you are at a loss where to start your search, you can check out the Lightcast tool featured in ‘Explore Career Options‘ on our website. Choose the career option that best matches your major, then scroll down to the Lightcast resource on that page.
This allows you to search based on industry and keywords to explore job titles, skills, employment trends for different roles, and more! It is a great way to explore what roles may interest you and the opportunities that can exist in your desired field.
3. Review Employers & Register for the Career Fair
As a UML student, we highly encourage you to attend a career fair. There are very few other opportunities where you can meet this many employers looking to hire students in different entry-level roles in various fields.
Registration for the Spring Career Fair is open, and students can review all the employers coming to the fair. Nervous about attending a career fair? Then join our Career Fair Prep Panel and hear from employers (who will also be at the Career Fair) what they like to see from students at the Career Fair and how to best prepare.
Pro Tip: Check out employers ahead of time and make a list of who you want to meet with to maximize your time at the Career Fair. (Plus reviewing employers and registering for the Career Fair is an easy way to get career-ready during spring break).
Once you return to campus, stop by our office or visit our website to access resources, guides, career blogs, drop-ins for resume review, and more!
We’re here to help you prepare for your next step and we know you’ve got this!
