What is Veterans’ Preference (+ Tips for Applying for Federal Jobs)

What is Veterans’ Preference?

The federal government is one of the largest employers in the United States and offers a broad variety of opportunities across a wide range of industries. The hiring process, however, can be lengthy and cumbersome. Individuals who have served in the Armed Forces seeking positions within both competitive and excepted service have some advantage through Veterans’ Preference, a policy intended to support returning soldiers and recognize their sacrifice, by allowing preferred status over other applicants.

Who is eligible for Veterans’ Preference?

There are different types of veterans’ preference that can be claimed based on categories including:

  • Length of active duty
  • Certain military campaigns
  • Disability status
  • Discharge conditions

Specific eligibility and documentation requirements can be found on the Partnership for Public Service website here.

How does Veterans’ Preference work?

When applying, veterans must indicate their status and provide documentation including proof of eligibility to determine the appropriate level of preference. During the pursuit of employment, additional points (generally 5 or 10) are added to the overall score, placing them higher on the list of competitive candidates. While this system does not guarantee a job offer, veteran’s preference is a benefit that prioritizes individuals for selection.

Tips for applying to federal jobs:

  • Use the federal resume-builder feature when creating your profile on USAJobs.
  • Prepare documentation in advance to streamline the application process as open positions are often posted for a very limited time.
  • Customize your resume highlighting relevant skills, experience and achievements that are transferable to the qualifications for the job.
  • Leverage your network and take advantage of veteran services that provide guidance on the search process.
  • Make note of the job # and agency contact information in order to follow up.

Veterans’ Preference is just one example of a program government agencies are implementing to encourage young people to engage in careers in public service. For further information about resources and insights to support your federal job search, make an appointment to meet with a Career Advisor .
