The clinical preceptor is a lead provider who provides the bridge from the theoretical concepts to real-life practice and prepare new providers to offer high quality comprehensive, culturally informed, compassionate health care. The clinical preceptor guides the student in practice through teaching, mentoring, role modeling, and evaluation. The clinical preceptor is a resource to the new provider and allows opportunities for the clinical application of knowledge and skills. The preceptor guides the student’s clinical learning experience, facilitates autonomy, and serves as a role model. The clinical preceptor provides clinical education, supervision and evaluation of new providers within the clinical setting. Preceptors provide new providers the opportunity to experience valuable clinical applications that are crucial to excelling at core clinical knowledge.
- Guide and mentor new provider on assessments and plans of care
- Assist with interpretation of lab and DI testing
- Guide and mentor writing progress notes
- Evaluate providers performance, decision making and interaction
- Orient the new provider to the clinical setting
- Assess the new providers progress and give appropriate feedback
- Communicate openly with the new provider and their chief
- Promote critical thinking/decision making and incorporate evidence-based practice in clinical decision making
- Review clinical documentation
- Provide direct supervision of clinical visits
- Complete routine clinical evaluations
- Socialize the new NP/MD to the role of independent provider through both formal and informal education.
- Facilitate case review with new provider
