Time commitment:

Winter: 125 hours minimum

Spring, Summer, Fall: 12 weeks – At least two-three days per week from 8:00am-5:00pm

Summary:

The Aquarist Intern position will assist staff with husbandry responsibilities at New England Aquarium’s (NEAq) Quincy Animal Care Center (QACC) in Quincy, MA. The Quincy Animal Husbandry Team provides care for animals undergoing quarantine prior to going to Boston, provides holding space for larger sharks/teleost awaiting exhibit display, as well as rearing larval fish and culturing a variety or live foods. From stingrays to reef fish to feeder shrimp, the NEAq’s QACC cares for a very diverse group of species housed in both small and large systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily care and maintenance for live animals which includes: food preparation, feedings, system cleaning and maintenance, and record keeping
  • Facility maintenance and cleaning to maintain the quarantine environment
  • Additional responsibilities may include transport of animals, organizing dry storage, and providing support to divers

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in biology and marine science, previous experience with animals preferred
  • This position requires physical labor, must be able to lift 40 lbs
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to take and carry out multiple instructions in a timely manner
  • Comfort working with frozen seafoods as well as live foods such as black worms and shrimp
  • Scuba certification helpful

This position is not located in Boston and is at our Animal Care Center located along the Fore River in Quincy. Transportation to this facility is easiest by car but one can also reach the facility by public transportation. Public transportation requires taking the Redline to Quincy Center, transferring to bus, and walking about 5 minutes.
