At UMass Lowell, we understand that our students put in a lot of effort to not only earn their degree, but also secure a job that matches their qualifications and interests. However, it’s not necessary for students to wait till their senior year to start exploring the job market, available opportunities, and potential career paths. In addition to meeting with a career advisor, we have many excellent tools to help you get a job at any level in your career journey.
One tool we always recommend to our students use is Handshake. This platform is the #1 way students can find jobs that fit their career interests. Handshake allows students to discover internships, co-ops, and jobs for recent and upcoming graduates. You can also find out about career fairs, workshops, and events that will help you get ready for your career. There are so many great features all through this one app—Handshake.
How do I get on Handshake?
If you are using Handshake for the first time, don’t worry. With a few simple steps, you can get set up to start receiving notifications for all of the wonderful items we just talked about.
1.) Download the app and activate your student account.
Depending on what device you have, you can access Handshake in several ways; App Store, Google Play, or directly through a browser. Based on which works best for your technical needs, click the corresponding link below.
2.) Update your profile to get personalized job recommendations.
There are several features within the application that allow you to tailor what you want to receive through Handshake (which you are welcome to update and change should your ever want to).
3.) Learn more about employers, their company culture, and open roles. Read reviews from college students and chat with recruiters.
Now that you have access to this tool and all the information it has, enjoy it! Start searching around to learn about events, employers, and opportunities—all through the tool. It is an excellent space to explore and learn more about not only different careers, different fields, but what different interests you may have too!
3.) RSVP for career fairs, workshops, and events coordinated through the Career & Co-op Center.
You’re familiar with the tool. You’ve researched your favorite companies. Now, it’s time to register for all the events that interest you! Like the Spring Career Fair on March 21st or the Careers in Criminal Justice & Security on April 4th.
4.) Apply to jobs in just a few clicks.
After using this tool to connect with employers, we encourage you to keep moving forward and strengthening those connections. With a few simple clicks, you can be on your way to apply for jobs and start your career journey.
