Many students in the Professional Co-op Program pursue a single co-op experience. It is frequently said that this experience propelled them into their career’s next steps. Other students enjoy their first co-op experience so much that they opt to complete a second co-op while here at UML.
Just take it from Uyen Mai, a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Management Information Systems and Analytics & Operations Management. Not only did she have two concentrations, but she also completed two, six-month co-op opportunities during her time in UMass Lowell’s undergraduate Professional Co-op Program.
Uyen completed her first co-op in 2022 at MFS Investment Management, focusing on her MIS concentration. Then, she completed a second co-op the following year at Bose Corporation, concentrating on the Analytics & Operations Management field.

Learning about the differences between organizations
“Each work experience amazed me as I experienced different working environments, organizational structures, team interactions, and work-life balances. In both MFS and Bose, I found it fascinating to gather insights and career advice from others. Each company created opportunities to engage with individuals from various aspects of the business; I was fortunate to hear the personal and professional stories and career journeys of so many in my field. My co-op experiences taught me one important lesson: not to be afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new.”
Embracing that you don’t know everything after one Co-op
“My two co-op experiences are entirely different fields of study and industry. I was nervous not knowing what to expect. However, thanks to taking that leap of faith, I had an amazing time learning new knowledge and having exposure to many aspects of the company. Though it could be nerve-racking at first, my co-op supervisor and her team have been a wonderful support. They encouraged me to learn from my mistakes and keep thriving for the best. I believe that is the beauty of doing a co-op. Students get to learn new things and try out what works for them and what they don’t like.”
Increased possibilities after graduation
“It prepares us for the world of possibilities after graduation. I highly recommend every UML student (who is eligible) enrolls in the Professional Co-op Program and seizes this amazing opportunity. I have gained so much confidence and met many great people along the way. Not only it is a great way to expand one’s skill sets, but going on a co-op helps students understand themselves better. If students can do more than one co-op in their college time, that is even better. The world is full of possibilities. Realizing the crucial role that the program plays in my career pathway, I am motivated to take on a mentor role and return to the program as a Co-op Program Assistant. If it had not been for the support from the program, I would not be where I am and who I am today.”
