3 Ways Teacher Resumes are Unique

Resumes are intended to demonstrate how your previous experiences have prepared you for your next job.  They’re supposed to showcase your skills and qualifications to help the reader understand that you should be interviewed for that position.  For teacher candidates there’s some a elements of a resume that you should include that will be different from your peers.  Here are a few of those areas

  1. Licensure

Progress toward or holding a teaching license is a baseline qualification for roles in public – and many other – schools. For new and early career teachers, consider having your licensure section at the top of your resume beneath your education section. If you hold a license, list what the license is along with your license number and any endorsements. If you’re still in progress, list “pending” instead of a number, and consider listing which MTELs you’ve passed to further demonstrate your progress.
  2. Teaching Experience

From observation hours to pre-practicum to student teaching, students in Education programs spend quite a lot of time in classrooms before earning their licensure. It’s helpful to include a Teaching Experience section noting what you did within these experiences. You could highlight details like grade levels and class sizes, types of lessons developed, models used, assessments, and more. Education-related jobs outside the classroom (e.g., tutoring, camp counseling, teaching Sunday school classes) could be listed in a Relevant Work Experience section to highlight them while keeping them separate from your licensure-track experiences.
  3. Unique Skills

Between classes and the variety of field experiences Education students have, you are exposed to a wide range of education-specific tools and technologies. While peers’ resumes may include skills like programming languages or laboratory tools, a teacher’s resume may include skills like Google Classroom, Seesaw, or Microsoft tools. You might also include certifications like CPR and First Aid, as these are relevant in an educational setting.
