The MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI) is seeking Teaching Assistants (TAs) for its 4-week summer course, titled “Intro to Quantum Software Development”. The intensive course will be taught virtually to an audience of talented high school students. They will learn the fundamentals of quantum computing, and how to write quantum programs through short lectures followed by coding challenges. By the end of the course, students will be able to implement real quantum algorithms in quantum software. The primary language of choice is Q#, but Qiskit may be presented as well. For more information on the BWSI program visit: https://bwsi.mit.edu/

TAs for this course will have the opportunity to help support the course’s curriculum and will aid in teaching the students throughout the summer session. This position provides candidates with excellent experience in project-based development and prototyping, teaching, and team management. The TAs are heavily involved in guiding teams through the summer. Students will enter the course with exposure to the necessary math, computing, and software background to dive into the unfamiliar quantum world. After a brief review, we will introduce the fundamentals of quantum computing and quantum software development. Then, we will explore some basic quantum algorithms and discuss their applications and implementation. In the fourth week, students will break into teams and compete for the most efficient implementation of a quantum algorithm.

The TAs will assist the instructors in the day-to-day coursework, give lectures, revise lecture and capstone project materials, and be the resident ‘expert’ within each student team. The program runs from July 6th to August 2nd 2026, Monday to Friday, from 10AM to 6PM EST to teach the course virtually alongside MITRE instructors. There will also be expectations that TAs attend weekly hour-long preparatory virtual meetings throughout June, leading up to the course.

Job Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a science, engineering, or math undergraduate program, or have attained an undergraduate degree in one of these areas.
  • Software engineering experience is required, including experience with modern tools and practices.
  • Proficiency with Visual Studio is a plus.
  • Basic exposure to quantum mechanics is required; exposure to quantum computing is preferred.
  • Experience with quantum software (Q# or Qiskit) is highly preferred, but not required.
  • Teaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience is highly preferred; applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their teaching skills in the interview.
  • TAs for this course should bring enthusiasm and an open mind as we delve into a new computing paradigm and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
